About the Artist

Emily Hickman has always been obsessed with jewelry.
As a small child, she made rings from aluminum foil and rhinestones. In elementary school, she strung beads. In high school, her favorite art teacher first exposed Emily to making silver jewelry. Unfortunately, she didn't stick with it. She went to college and studied business administration.

After spending 20 years of her life doing what was expected of her and ignoring her creative side, she was bored. A midlife crisis was born, but this one didn't involve a shiny red convertible. This one involved a jeweler's torch, and of all things . . . tools!!!?

Emily went back to school and studied jewelry fabrication at North Seattle Community College and also took workshops at Danaca Design in Seattle. Her influences come from the jewelry she was exposed to in her childhood. The stuff of her mother's jewelry box: Modernist pieces from the 1950's; and vintage Native American turquoise. Her work is also largely influenced by the art and jewelry of ancient cultures, giving it a look that while modern, also has the feel of the past.

Eventually, Emily started her own business, "Cat's Eye Creations", and began selling at arts and crafts festivals. Her work can also be seen at Danaca Design Metal Crafting Center and Gallery in Seattle and at the Gallery at the Shoreline Center in Shoreline, Washington.
